The Three R’s

The Three R’s page is used by the investigator to describe how they have applied the concept of the 3 R’s (Reduction, Refinement and Replacement) in the proposed study to minimize the pain and distress in animals. The intent of asking this information during protocol submission is to ensure that investigator is using minimal number of test animals, has explored means to reduce the pain and distress in research animals, and explored the use of other living or non-living models instead of the species described in the proposed research. In addition, this page allows the investigator to provide information about alternate literature searches they performed to search for procedures less painful than the ones proposed in the research.

The Three R’s page has three main component areas that allow for the entry and maintenance of information describing the justification of the research and exploration of alternate procedures that cause lesser pain and distress to animals.
