Academic Appointees
The Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties
is responsible for administering policies and maintaining
records for all academic personnel. The Indiana
University Academic Handbook contains information,
policies, and procedures that apply to academic appointees
on all campuses of the University. Questions concerning
the use of academic ranks and titles or the provisions
of policies affecting academic appointees should be
directed to the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean
of the Faculties on your campus.
Summer
Salary
Faculty members on academic-year appointments may be
given summer appointments on external grants or contracts.
Detailed information about calculating
summer salary and limitations is available at
www.iupui.edu/~resed/srs/spoadmin/calsumsalary.html.
Nonacademic Appointees
University
Human Resource Services is responsible for the formulation
and administration of University-wide nonacademic personnel
programs, policies, and procedures; and providing assistance
and guidance to the operating units in all nonacademic
personnel matters. Within most departments, personnel
representatives are available for help with organizational
and staff planning programs.
Standard
University procedures are to be used in making staff
appointments on research projects. The University is
committed to following the same evaluation procedures
for positions funded by grants and contracts as those
funded through other sources.
Extra Compensation
In preparing external funding proposals, keep the University's
policy on extra compensation in mind. The following
excerpt is from the section titled "Outside
Activities and Extra Compensation" in the
Indiana
University Academic Handbook:
"Faculty
members devoting part time to projects supported by
contracts and grants will receive General Fund salary
support only for that portion of their time devoted
to regular University programs of instruction and research.
In no case will the total salary components from General
Fund and contract or grant sources exceed 100 percent
of the faculty member's normal, budgeted salary rate."
Some
general guidelines:
- Academic
year or fiscal year salary for faculty may be included
in a grant only on a released time basis with a
like reduction in General Fund support for the period
- Summer
support may be included following current summer
pay guidelines
- Occasional
short-term consulting funds may be included for
IU faculty members from other departments or from
separate or remote operations of the same unit
- Funding
for current research appointees named in the application
must follow University salary policies, which specify,
among other things, that rate increases are permitted
only on anniversary dates of appointment, and that
justification must be provided for extraordinary
increases
Questions regarding compensation and extra compensation
for work on active grants or contract projects should
be directed to Contract
and Grant Administration or the Office of Academic
Affairs and Dean of the Faculties on your campus.
Questions for preparing proposal budgets should be
directed to
Sponsored Research Services.
